No relief in the small hours. The air sat near 86° and wet, a steady wind off the sea doing little more than moving the heat around. Cloud thickened through the morning and then tore away near noon. The early afternoon was the worst of it, near 92° under a bare sky with the wind blowing hard and no cool in it. Evening brought the cloud back in patches. The air hardly dropped at all as the dark came.
