Bitter before dawn. The cold went deeper as the dark wore on and sat near −8°F by 7am, the air thick and still. Then at 9am the cloud broke and the light came in hard and low, and the sky stayed open well past noon. The air eased to 7° in that sun, almost gentle after the morning. The sky closed again late in the afternoon. Snow began around 7pm, thin at first and then steady, and a wind rose behind it that leaned harder as the evening went on.
