Cool and clear before dawn, the air near 55° and damp on the railings. Then the heat came early for May. By late morning it was already hot and by mid-afternoon near 96°, a dry heat off the pavement that made the shade side of every street the busy side. Barely any wind to help. Cloud gathered toward evening and a thunderstorm broke near 8pm, a hard short rain that steamed off the streets, and the air let go slowly after it.
