Snow in the small hours, heavy at first and thinning toward dawn, with a strong wind that made the air feel far colder than the thermometer said. By breakfast the snow had stopped and the cloud began to pull back. The sun came out before eleven. It gave light and no warmth, the air never feeling warmer than 15° under a hard blue sky with the wind still cutting. Evening was clear and brutal. The cold deepened as the dark came on.
