Warm and thick in the small hours, the air near 80° under low cloud that thinned toward dawn. The morning came hazy and hot. By early afternoon it was near 87° and the humidity had the whole city walking slowly, cloud piling up overhead. Then the sky broke. Rain came down hard through the late afternoon and evening, more than two inches of it, running in the gutters and steaming off the streets when it paused. The air stayed close after it and the night was as wet as the day.
