Warm and close through the small hours, the air near 74° and hardly moving. Cloud thinned with the dawn and by mid-morning the sky was clear. Then the heat came on hard, near 99° by mid-afternoon with a hot wind out of the southwest and the pavement throwing it back. Nothing eased until the sun was low. Evening stayed near 88° at midnight, the air still thick and the streets slow to empty.
